Marco Wittmann looking to wrap-up DTM title a race early in Hungary

BMW Motorsport and Marco Wittmann head into this weekend’s round at the Hungaroring with a healthy advantage in the title fight, with The Team RMG driver close to securing his second crown in the series.

Wittmann has taken three victories this season, one of two drivers, along with main title rival Edoardo Mortara to have repeat victories this season. The German is only one win away from his personal best, set in 2014, when he dominated the championship to take his first drivers’ title.

The Team RMG driver won in Budapest the last time the DTM visited the track two years ago, and Wittmann believes the Hungarian weekend will be a challenging one.

“I think it is great to return to Budapest after a year away,” he said. “I have fond memories of the circuit. I was very successful there in 2014. A similar result would be nice this year. However, a lot has changed out on the track since the last time we raced there. For example, there is a new surface. That will be a challenge for all the drivers.”

BMW Motorsport leads the manufacturers’ standings, 57 points ahead of Audi Sport and 92 over Mercedes AMG. The Bavarian squad also leads the teams’ table thanks to Team RMG with 228 points, nine over Team Abt Sportsline.

BMW motorsport director Jens Marquardt believes consistency and team play are at the heart of BMW’s results this year, and expects two very intense last two rounds of the season.

“With the packages being so evenly matched, the winner of the drivers’ Championship will be the most consistent man,” said Marquardt. “In the manufacturers’ Championship and the team competition, the most compact team performance will be the key. We have done a good job so far in that regard, and that is why we top the standings. The important thing now is to keep our concentration and to convert it into good results at the final two race weekends.”
