Edoardo Mortara takes pole, leading Audi top eight at the Hungaroring

Edoardo Mortara took pole position for today’s Race 1 at the Hungaroring in a session dominated by Audi

Team Phoenix’s Timo Scheider set the first benchmark in the session, before Jamie Green and Edoardo Mortara then set the pace for the rest of the session.

Edoardo Mortara set his best lap on his last attempt and with the chequered flag already out with a time of 1:35.282, beating Jamie Green by just 0.082 seconds and setting a new track record.

As had happened in the second free practice, Audi Sport put their cars in the top eight positions, with Team Abt’s Miguel Molina in third, followed by Team Phoenix’ Mike Rockenfeller. Nico Müller was fifth, followed by Adrien Tambay, Timo Scheider and Mattias Ekström, eighth 0.528 seconds behind Mortara.

Felix Rosenqvist was the fastest Mercedes driver in ninth, followed by BMW’s Marco Wittmann, who could only manage tenth place for the Bavarian manufacturer, 0.611 seconds off the pace.

Mercedes AMG struggled throughout the session, with Daniel Juncadella their second fastest driver in 16th place. Robert Wickens was 18th, 0.799 seconds off the pace, and already in a very difficult position to keep any championship hopes alive.

Race 1 is scheduled for 14:58 CET.
