Edoardo Mortara optimistic ahead of season finale
Audi Sport driver Edoardo Mortara is confident of his ability to win his first DTM title, as he heads towards the season finale in Hockenheim this weekend.
The Italian trails Marco Wittmann by just 14 points after the BMW driver was excluded from Sunday’s results at the Hungaroring because of a technical infringement.
This puts the Team Abt Sportsline driver in a strong position to win his first title in the series, dependent only on himself to score the necessary points. Two wins would give Mortara the title, regardless of Wittmann’s results, and the Audi driver is confident of being able to repeat the performance shown back in May, when he won the season opener at the Baden Wüttemberg track.
“I look forward to the grand finale and am travelling to Hockenheim with optimism and full of self confidence,” said the Italian. “We won the first race of the year there in May and should have a chance for victory in the finale as well. There are only 14 points separating us. Now, we’re hoping to overtake Wittmann in the final sprint. We’re not going to give up and battle up until the end.”
Audi Sport is also clear as to their target this weekend. After scoring an all-Audi top six result on Saturday and a 1-2 on Sunday at the Hungaroring, the squad is ready not only to support Mortara, but also to defend their options in the manufacturers’ title, where the four-ring maker has a 37-point lead over BMW, with Mercedes AMG 174 points adrift.
Dieter Gass, Head of DTM at Audi Sport, won’t tolerate any mistakes from his men: “We’re going to leave no stone unturned to deliver an equally strong performance as in the past two years. We’re actually still in contention for all three titles which proves that we’re looking back on a very good season. But we haven’t reached our goal yet. Everyone involved in this effort has to do a zero-defects job.”
