Robert Wickens aiming to end on a high after title hopes dashed in Budapest

Mercedes AMG driver Robert Wickens is looking to salvage the season by grabbing third place in the final drivers’ standings, after a difficult weekend in Budapest ended his title charge.

The Canadian was in contention for the drivers’ crown throughout most of the season, but a mistake on the way to Sunday’s grid in Budapest hurt his chances. Heading to the season finale in Hockenheim, the Team HWA driver is fourth in the standings, 15 points behind Jamie Green, who’s currently third and has a slim shot at the title.

Wickens is hoping to finish the season on a positive note: “This is going to be a bitter-sweet finale for me. I would have liked to have been in championship contention until the very end, really I would. My goal is to fight for podium places at Hockenheim and finish the season in third place in the overall standings.”

Mercedes AMG has had a season with many ups and downs, with good raw pace performances, but generally penalised for a heavier weight compared to their rivals. The Stuttgart manufacturer will start its home round with the C63 DTMs on 1,125kg. Trailing manufacturers’ leaders Audi Sport by 174 points, Mercedes AMG will focus on bringing a good result to their fans on home ground.

Ulrich Fritz, Head of DTM at Mercedes AMG, said: “The whole team are really looking forward to delivering another strong performance this weekend in Hockenheim. Hockenheim is always a bit special for our team. The atmosphere is really unique, and we get incredible support from our fans. Even if we can no longer win the drivers’ title, we think it important to inspire the fans again and round off the season with a decent result.”
