Marco Wittman promises a “very interesting” final race of 2016
BMW Motorsport driver Marco Wittmann finished second today in Hockenheim, increasing his advantage by three points in the standings over Audi’s Edoardo Mortara.
The Team RMG driver started from fourth place on the grid and overtook fellow BMW driver Tom Blomqvist in the start. After Audi’s Miguel Molina opened a gap, the championship leader took second position from António Félix Da Costa. Despite Mortara’s recovery in the race, Wittmann remained unchallenged until the end of the race.
“It was a good race, from fourth position to second on the podium,” Wittmann told TouringCarTimes. “I scored three more points than Edo, which are going to be very important tomorrow.”
Asked about whether he saw himself as champion at some point during the race, the German driver said: “The race was good and every result counts for the championship. I wasn’t thinking about the points, but rather focussing on having a good result. I think this was a good race, and a particularly good one for the DTM.”
Team RMG now trails Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline by 26 points in the teams’ table. Wittmann said: “The teams’ championship is important and it would be good to score more points, but it’s going to be difficult now. I have to focus on my battle and on doing my job the best I can.”
Wittmann also had words of acknowledgement for his rival in the battle for the title: “Edoardo Mortara did a great race today and totally deserved to be on the podium. Tomorrow we are going to have a very interesting race.”
