Mike Rockenfeller sets the pace in Hungaroring first free practice

Audi Sport driver Mike Rockenfeller set the fastest time in the first free practice session at the Hungaroring.

Light rain fell over the track for ten minutes prior to the session, but it wasn’t enough for the cars to have to go out on wet tyres.

The Team Phoenix driver set a best lap time of 1:36.404, with fellow Audi driver Nico Müller in second just 0.160 seconds behind. Reigning champion Marco Wittmann was third in a positive session for the Bavarian manufacturer, 0.580 seconds off the pace.

Audi Sport had a strong session, with Mattias Ekström in fourth, followed by BMW’s Augusto Farfus. The RS 5 DTMs of René Rast and Jamie Green followed, with the Briton 0.721 seconds behind Rockenfeller. Timo Glock was eighth with his RMR’s BMW, with Lucas Auer being the best-placed Mercedes AMG, and the only one to make it into the top ten, in ninth, 0.779 seconds off the pace.

Loïc Duval had a positive session, finishing in tenth place, despite being the first driver to be over a second off the pace.

Thunder, lightning and heavy rain covered the Hungaroring just as the session was coming to an end.

The DTM is back on track tomorrow morning, with second free practice scheduled for 9:40 CET.
