René Rast takes second pole of the weekend at the Hungaroring
Audi Sport driver René Rast was again the fastest man on track and took his second pole position of the weekend, and his DTM career at the Hungaroring.
Despite the overnight rain, conditions remained dry during the day. However the track was slippery, with many drivers suffering understeer and sliding whilst on the track.
Mercedes drivers Lucas Auer and Edoardo Mortara led during the initial stages, with Audi soon taking command of the session with successive quick laps by Jamie Green and Mike Rockenfeller.
The entire field went back to the pits after their first runs, returning to the track with six minutes left on the clock.
Reigning champion Marco Wittmann rose to first position with a time of 1:34.803, but it was Audi’s René Rast who, on his last flying lap, managed to get ahead of the BMW to take his second pole position of the weekend with a time of 1:34.740, two-thousands of a second faster than his yesterday’s pole time.
The four Audis of Mattias Ekström, Nico Müller, Mike Rockenfeller and Jamie Green followed, with the Briton just over three-tenths away from the pole time.
Standings leader Lucas Auer was the best-placed Mercedes in seventh, followed by the BMWs of Timo Glock, Augusto Farfus and Tom Blomqvist, with Blomqvist half a second off the pace.
Yesterday’s winner Paul Di Resta was 12th, with Mercedes running different strategies to make the most of tyre management.
The start of Race 2 is scheduled for 15:18 CET.
