Robert Wickens to make Indycar debut this weekend

Mercedes AMG driver Robert Wickens will make his Indycar debut this weekend at Elkhart Lake, driving for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports.

The Canadian received the opportunity through fellow countryman James Hinchcliffe, driver of the sister single-seater Dallara Honda at the American team. Hinchcliffe’s usual team-mate, Russian Mikhail Aleshin, is stuck in France after participating in the Le Mans 24 Hours due to visa issues.

Hinchcliffe and Wickens had a drive swap back in February, with Wickens racing the Dallara at Sebring, and Hinchcliffe having a go in the DTM Mercedes at Vallelunga three weeks later.

Wickens is initially scheduled to run just on Friday, with Aleshin hoping to resolve the immigration issue and take over for the reminder of the weekend, with the team issuing further updates on the Russian’s situation as they become available.
