BMW and Audi react to Mercedes withdrawal from the DTM
Mercedes AMG’s decision to withdraw from the DTM at the end of 2018 has raised doubts about the future and viability of the series, with both Audi Sport and BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt vowing to find a solution to ensure the series continuity.
“It is with great regret that we acknowledge that Mercedes will end their involvement in the DTM after the 2018 season. This decision is a heavy blow for the DTM,” said Jens Marquardt.
“Now it is time to evaluate the situation and discuss scenarios for the future with the ITR, whether based on the existing regulations or on different ones, such as the GT regulations,” in clear reference to a switch to Class One from 2019.
Marquardt concluded: “It is too early to speculate on the long-term effects for the DTM. The fans certainly deserve the future of the DTM to be fought for. That’s what we will do.”
Audi Sport posted on their social media: “Hey Mercedes AMG! We regret your decision to leave DTM at the end of 2018. We had (and have) great battles!” before adding “Top international touring car racing is a very important component of our factory motorsport strategy.”
