Jamie Green on pole again for Race 2 at the Red Bull Ring

Jamie Green continued to show Audi Sport’s dominant form at the Red Bull Ring, scoring his second pole position of the weekend after a thrilling battle with team-mate at Rosberg René Rast during the final minutes of the session.

The first stint saw all manufacturers competing against each other, with Audi’s Mike Rockenfeller and Rast, Mercedes’ Gary Paffett and BMW’s Marco Wittmann all alternating for the top spot.

At the start of the session, BMW driver Bruno Spengler was reported to the stewards for blocking Mercedes’ Lucas Auer, which will be investigated after the session.

The entire field returned to the pits for fresh tyres and adjustments, with Rast’s 1:22.152 a competitive benchmark. Auer, at this point down in 15th place, was the first to return to the track, with directions from his engineer to work on his final sector.

The final two minutes were frenetic, as Rockenfeller and Green got close to Rast’s time, with the Briton taking the top spot with 40 seconds to go. Marco Wittmann slid at Turn 8 but was able to take third, before Rast grabbed back pole again, only to be outdone once more by Green, with a time of 1:21.955 as the chequered flag came out.

Rast was second, 0.055 seconds from his team-mate, with Wittmann relegated two-tenths behind after the final charge from the Audi drivers.

Audi drivers Rockenfeller and Nico Müller were next up, having set the same lap time, a quarter of a second off pole.

Gary Paffett was the only Mercedes to make it into the top ten with the sixth-fastest time, followed by BMW’s Timo Glock. Championship leader Mattias Ekström was eighth, nearly four-tenths off the pace, with the BMWs of Tom Blomqvist and Spengler completing the top ten.

Mercedes struggled in the session, with Auer having traffic problems in his final stint, with Mercedes chief championship contender qualifying in 18th and last.

The start of Race 2 is scheduled for 15:18 CET.
