Audi Sport celebrate winning all three DTM titles at Hockenheim
Audi Sport enjoyed a successful day at Hockenheim on Saturday, not only winning the race with Jamie Green, but also securing the manufacturers’ and teams’ titles. In the drivers’ championship, both BMW’s Marco Wittmann and Mercedes’ Lucas Auer were left out of contention, which means Audi are also the drivers’ champions, though it remains to be seen with which driver out of Mattias Ekström, Green, Mike Rockenfeller or René Rast
“It’s a fantastic day for us,” said Audi Sport boss Dieter Gass. “Today it’s a dream come true for us, coming here. This weekend is the subject of my wildest dreams, to win the manufacturers’, teams’ and also the drivers’ titles. It’s great to be able to look forward to an exciting race tomorrow and see what comes out.”
Audi has secured the manufacturers’ title with 749 points, 196 ahead of Mercedes AMG and 232 ahead of BMW Motorsport. In the teams’ championship, Team Rosberg leads the table with 322 points, with Team Abt Sportsline also in contention on 253 points. Third is Mercedes Me, already out of reach, 113 points adrift.
Gass also joked about having four drivers in contention for the title: “Maybe some guy from marketing has thought about doing t-shirts for all the drivers, but we will see.”
Prior to the weekend, Gass had expressed that Audi wouldn’t give any team orders beyond asking their drivers to not eliminate each other. After today’s result, and given the grid-drop penalties for Jamie Green and Mattias Ekström, the head of Audi Sport said: “We still cannot relax, so there will be some orders, mainly, for the boys to not crash against each other. Other than that, I hope we can see an exciting race.”
