René Rast escapes unhurt after a massive crash at the Lausitzring

Reigning champion René Rast has escaped unhurt and by his own foot after a massive crash in the first DTM race of today at the Lausitzring, causing the race to be red flagged.

The race had just been restarted after a six-lap safety car intervention because another accident at the start.

Audi’s Loïc Duval got on Rast’s inside at the exit of Turn 3, with both RS 5 DTMs colliding and sending Rast into a roll and the car receiving substantial damage.

Rast was able to leave the car by himself and was immediately attended to by the on-site medical services, who put a neck support and took the Audi driver to the circuit’s medical centre.

Team Rosberg’s boss Arno Zensen said: “He wasn’t on the radio, but I saw him getting out of the car. Last time I saw a car rolling in DTM was back in 2010 and this is one of the biggest accidents I’ve seen, this shows the DTM cars are very safe.”
