Audi after the Lausitzring races: “A rough weekend for us”
Audi Sport leaves the Lausitzring with Mike Rockenfeller as their best placed driver in the championship in tenth place, with Audi a distant third in the manufacturers’ table, 160 points behind Mercedes AMG.
“In general it was a rough weekend for us,” said Head of Audi Motorsport Dieter Gass, who is clearly unhappy about the squad’s performance so far this season. “Apart from the accidents on Saturday in which thankfully nothing happened to the drivers, we were again lacking in performance. Compared to Saturday we could improve slightly. But we are not where we want to be.”
Jamie Green did the honours for Audi Sport in the second race at the Lausitzring with sixth position, scoring his first points of the season.
Green took to the track with his repaired RS 5 DTM after yesterday’s heavy shunt with fellow Audi driver Nico Müller. A promising second place in the final free practice didn’t carry on onto the qualifying, with the Briton only managing the 16th spot on the grid.
The Team Rosberg driver knew the key was to avoid traffic, pitting at the end of lap one to drive alone for most of the race. In the closing stages, Green overtook BMW’s Philipp Eng to finish in sixth place, scoring his first 2018 points.
“I had to drive 33 laps on one set of tires, but my car was good and consistent,” said the Briton. “Yes, it was a risk, but it paid off. The tyres lasted very well because the balance of my car was good.”
“This result was very important for my self-confidence. But we still have a lot of work to do,” added Green after yet another difficult weekend for Audi Sport.
