Joel Eriksson fastest in tight second free practice at Hockenheim

BMW Team RBM driver Joel Eriksson set the fastest lap time on Saturday’s second free practice session at Hockenheim, ahead of fellow BMW driver Augusto Farfus.

Eriksson set a best lap time of 1:32.914, with Farfus just 0.002 seconds behind. Mercedes-AMG’s Gary Paffett was the fastest among the title contenders in third, only 0.003 seconds off the pace.

Nico Müller was the fastest Audi in fourth, 0.045 seconds behind Eriksson, followed by reigning champion René Rast.

BMW Team RMG’s Timo Glock was sixth, followed by Mercedes-AMG’s Pascal Wehrlein and Audi’s Jamie Green. Audi Sport Team Abt Sportline’s Robin Frijns was ninth, with Team Phoenix’s Loïc Duval completing the top ten.

Championship leader Paul di Resta had a quiet session, never within the top ten, finishing in 15th position, half a second off the pace.

Most drivers returned to the track with five minutes to go for a final run, but BMW Team RMG’s Marco Wittmann lost it at the braking point at the Sachs corner with one minute left on the clock which, together with Frijns spinning at the last corner, ended the final runs.

The qualifying session for Race 1 is scheduled for 10:55 CEST.
