Bruno Spengler fastest in wet second practice at Hockenheim

Bruno Spengler made the most of difficult wet conditions at Hockenheim ahead of the DTM season opener to set the fastest lap in second free practice for BMW Motorsport, with R-Motorsport’s rookie Jake Dennis in a surprising second place at the wheel of his Aston Martin Vantage DTM.

BMW Motorsport Team RBM’s Philipp Eng wasn’t able to take part in the session due to a technical issue in his M4 DTM after the first free practice.

The session had started under light rain, but it stopped half way through, with lap times improving towards the end, albeit not enough to mount slicks. Ferdinand Habsburg went off at Sachs in the early stages of the session, but was able to recover his Aston Martin Vantage DTM to go back to the track.

Spengler scored the fastest lap time in his last flying lap, with a time of 1:43.780 at the wheel of his M4 DTM from Team RMG. Dennis was also fast in the closing stages of the session, finishing second just 0.014 seconds off the pace.

Marco Wittmann was third for BMW Motorsport, followed by Audi Sport Team Rosberg’s René Rast, two-tenths off the pace.

Timo Glock was fifth for BMW Motorsport Team RMG, with Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline’s Nico Müller next. Daniel Juncadella was seventh at the wheel of his R-Motorsport’s Aston Martin Vantage DTM, half-a-second off the pace.

Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline’s Robin Frijns finished eighth, with Team Phoenix’s pair formed by Loïc Duval and Mike Rockenfeller completing the top ten.

Paul di Resta was only able to complete a couple of out laps with his Vantage DTM, not scoring any lap times in this session.

The qualifying session for Race 1 is scheduled for Saturday at 10:30 CEST.
