Robin Frijns closes in on Nico Müller in Lausitzring second free practice
Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline dominated the second free practice session at the Lausitzring Grand Prix layout with Nico Müller and Robin Frijns on top.
Audi Sport Team Phoenix’s Loïc Duval set a reference lap time at the beginning of the session, but encountered technical issues that forced the Frenchman to spend most of the time in the garage, with his mechanics working on the rear end of his RS 5 DTM.
Müller set a best lap time of 1:36.904 early in the session, pipping Frijns by just 0.015 seconds. Team RBM’s Sheldon van der Linde was again the fastest driver for BMW Motorsport in third, 0.435 seconds behind the Swiss.
Team Rosberg’s Jamie Green was fourth, with BMW Team RMR’s Lucas Auer right behind, 0.485 seconds off the pace. Fellow BMW driver Philipp Eng was sixth, half a second behind Müller.
Team Phoenix’s Mike Rockefeller was seventh. Reigning champion René Rast spent an important part of the session in the garage, taking to the track in the second half as the team worked on the car setup. Rast could only manage eighth place, 0.671 seconds off.
BMW drivers Jonathan Aberdein (Team RMR) and Timo Glock (Team RMG) completed the top ten, with the German driver eight-tenths off the pace.
Track activities resume on Saturday morning at 10:45 CEST with the qualifying session for Race 1.
