Robin Frijns seeking his first victory as DTM return to Lausitzring

Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline driver Robin Frijns hopes that the third round of the 2020 DTM season, taking place this weekend at the Lausitzring with the Grand Prix layout, will confirm his ascending curve this year with the Dutchman’s first victory in the series.

The Dutchman has started from the front row in the four races held so far, with three pole positions but no victory yet. Two podium results place Frijns third in the championship, 42 points behind leading team-mate Nico Müller and three adrift from reigning champion René Rast.

“It is a bit strange to see how it is going this year, to be honest, because, in the past, qualifying has never been my strongest point,” said Frijns.

“We now have been really strong in qualifying, but not quick enough throughout the races. But I don’t think that this is going to be an issue for the entire year.

“We still have seven race weekends left and I’m optimistic that my first DTM win is very close,” added the Dutch.

The Lausitzring event will host the third round of a compressed season in just four weeks. Despite the DTM enjoying a thrilling race last weekend at the Sprint layout, with a resurgence of BMW, there are new challenges to be discovered at the 4.570-kilometre track, presenting two additional overtaking points.

“Personally, I prefer the longer track configuration at Lausitzring as it provides more opportunities for overtaking,” added Frijns.

“Moreover, I can imagine that the tyres will not degrade as much as at the sprint circuit, because they aren’t loaded as much on the straight. That is something that should suit me.”

Audi Sport heads to the third round of the season in a strong position with 283 points, with BMW a distant second with 107.
