Timo Glock leads all BMW front row for Zolder Race 2
BMW Team RMG’s Timo Glock made amends for missing out on pole position for DTM Race 1 at Zolder, by setting the fastest time in second qualifying at Zolder.
Glock had looked like topping Saturday morning’s first qualifying session before being pipped by defending champion René Rast in the final seconds, but made no mistake this time by setting a time of 1:28.960.
Sheldon van der Linde made it an all BMW front-row after what has been a difficult weekend for the brand. The South African ended up just two-hundredths of a seconds adrift of Glock at the end of the session.
Rast finished up third on the grid, having set the initial benchmark early in the session, with a 1:31.709.
The Race 1 winner went a tenth of a second quicker than Audi’s Jamie Green, while Ferdinand Habsburg (WRT Audi) was third.
Like the first session, many drivers lost lap times due to track limits abuse, with Robert Kubica, Loïc Duval and Robin Frijns running too wide at Turn 6.
Fabio Scherer (WRT Audi) and Philipp Eng (BMW Team RBM) lost times for exceeding the track limits at Turn 6 and Turn 9) twice during the 20-minute session.
Glock then set his best time, to initially go nearly three-tenths of a second faster than Rast, but a late effort from van der Linde relegated the champion back to the second row of the grid.
A similarly late effort from Habsburg put him fourth, ahead of Green and Mike Rockenfeller.
Championship leader Nico Müller crucially qualified ahead of rival Frijns, having lost points to the Dutchman and Rast in the opening race on Saturday.
Frijns starts eighth, just behind Müller and ahead of another pair of BMWs in Jonathan Abderdein and Marco Wittmann.
Race 2 at Zolder is scheduled to start at 13:30 CEST.
