Tom Boardman to get engine change penalty

Tom Boardman will be given a five place grid penalty after changing his engine after his crash in warm up at Morocco.

The Special Tuning Racing driver will drop five positions for the first race despite having tried to get around the FIA’s stringent engine change penalty rule by not withdrawing the car from the race at Morocco, and trying to serve the grid drop at the first race.

Unfortunately as Tom Boardman’s car never crossed the timing beacon in Marrakech, it was ruled that the car never took part in the race under Article 73.2, and so the penalty will be applied to this weekend instead.

An engine will be considered as having been used once the car’s timing transponder has indicated that it has left the pit lane
Article 73.2

Boardman will be one of two drivers to take a grid drop this weekend, with Campos Racing’s Fernando Monje also dropping five spots after colliding with James Thompson in the second race at Marrakech.
