Citroën Racing targeting experienced circuit racers for 2014

Citroën Racing plan to have a driver with a WTCC title winning level of experience in their team alongside Sébastien Loeb when they join the Championship next season, and also haven’t ruled out Robert Kubica joining the team with a limited programme.

The French manufacturer will join the Championship next season with either two or three cars, joining Honda and Lada as the other manufacturers which have committed so far.

Citroën say they plan to be able to fight for wins early on and to be in a position to win the Championship as soon as possible, and are targeting having one of last year’s three works Chevrolet drivers in the team next season.

“The idea is to have a driver with a lot of experience in touring cars, who was in a position to win the championship in the past season,” Citroën Racing Team Principal Yves Matton told TouringCarTimes. “For sure the three drivers who finished on the podium last year on my short-list,” he added.

Citroën have also confirmed that they plan to take advantage of former Formula 1 driver Robert Kubica’s racing experience, which could result in an outing next season.

“There’s nothing with Robert on touring cars for the moment as he’s 150% involved in his rally programme, but when we made an agreement this year for rally, he said he’d help us with all the advice he has, but I don’t think he needs to be in the car at the moment to give us good advice,” said Matton.

“For the moment it’s not a decision we have with him, but if something is possible we will try to bring him for at least one event.”
