Leonel Pernía wins stadium race at La Plata

Renault Lo Jack Team driver Leonel Pernía won the special stadium round of the 2013 Argentinian Super TC 2000 Championship at the Estadio Unico at La Plata, and is now the only driver who can prevent Toyota’s Matías Rossi from winning the drivers’ title.

At the stadium round, which saw the Super TC 2000 field compete in a rally Super Special Stage-style format, Pernía came out on top with Chevrolet’s Agustín Canapino the runner-up and Peugeot driver Néstor Girolami in third.

Pernía had won his first heat against Peugeot’s Franco Riva, then the 38-year-old went on to defeat Chevrolet’s Franco Girolami in the second heat, setting up a duel with the Toyota Corolla of Bernardo Llaver in the third heat.

After dispatching one Toyota, he was faced with another in heat four, defeating championship leader Matías Rossi in the fourth heat to take on Equipo Chevrolet YPF’s Agustín Canapino in the final.

“In a soccer field a Pernía had to do well,” said Pernía, the son of professional football player Vicente Alberto Pernia and himself a former football player.

Pernía’s victory with Rossi falling in heat four means the title is now between the two drivers with just two rounds to go. Rossi leads with 215 points, with Pernía 51 points behind with just 66 points available at the final two rounds at San Martín and Potrero de los Funes.
