Wiechers-Sport to withdraw from Macau due to damage

The Wiechers-Sport team are set to withdraw from the season finale at Macau due to the damage sustained to Fredy Barth’s BMW 320 TC during qualifying.

The Swiss driver had set the 16th fastest time in qualifying before he brought out the third red flag of the session after crashing out at Paiol, the same corner where he had a heavy crash in 2011 while racing with SUNRED Engineering.

The damage to the BMW’s front end was severe, and the FIA are to inspect the rollcage this evening to confirm whether it is still race worthy, but team principal Dominik Greiner told TouringCarTimes that the damage is too extensive to repair in any case and they will be withdrawing from the race

“The car was OK, I started pushing a bit, and I was right behind (Darryl) O’Young but I couldn’t really see where I was going,” said Barth to TouringCarTimes.

Wiechers-Sport’s withdrawal reduces the number of cars in the race to 33, and promotes Darryl O’Young to 16th position.
