Wiechers-Sport to sit out the 2014 WTCC season

Wiechers-Sport is not going to take part in the 2014 FIA World Touring Car Championship but is aiming to be back for 2015.
”It is with a heavy heart that we will not show up for the season start of the WTCC for the first time in nine years,” said Dominik Greiner, Team Manager.

The German team has run privateer BMWs in the championship since 2005 with two drivers’ titles for Marc Hennerici in 2005 and Stefano D’Aste in 2007.
”It is unfortunate that we are not going to be there for the 2014 season. However, the economic conditions for TC1 as a privateer team is too big of a risk. That is why I have decided to sit out this season,” said Wolfgang Kruse, Team Owner.

The new regulations for 2014 divides the field in to two classes, TC1 for the new faster and more powerful cars and TC2 for the older cars. Wiechers-Sport’s BMW 320 TC is eligible in the TC2 class, a class not attractive enough according to Greiner.
”We have looked at all options for a start this season. Unfortunately the demand for a TC2 vehicle is virtually non-existent, so we were unable to achieve a sporting and economic basis for this year,” said Greiner.

The team is instead aiming to be back for the 2015 season with a new TC1 specification car.
”Our goal is quite clear to go for a TC1 vehicle in 2015, we are working hard for it,” said Greiner.
