Néstor Girolami takes points lead with double victory in Santa Fe

Peugeot Lo Jack Team’s Néstor Girolami has taken the lead of the 2014 Argentinian Super TC 2000 Championship after securing a pair of victories in the two-race heat at the Sante Fe circuit this weekend.

Girolami led home his Peugeot team-mate Agustín Canapino to secure a 1-2 for the team, while Girolami also benefitted from a technical malady for former points leader Norberto Fontana, whose Equipo YPF Chevrolet Cruze retired in the pits six laps from the end of the race.

The only major incident in the race also involved championship protagonist Mariano Werner. The Fiat driver was eliminated from the race on lap seven, after he was crashed into by the Renault Fluence of Emiliano Spataro, who suffered a brake failure at the end of the straight before the first chicane.

Girolami won the race 2.6 seconds clear of Canapino, with Fiat’s Christian Ledesma finishing in the final spot on the podium.

Leonel Pernía took fourth for Renault, with Franco Vivian the best placed Chevrolet driver in fifth ahead of Facundo Ardusso’s Fiat Linea, Julián Santero and Facundo Chapur’s Peugeot 308s, with Matías Rossi for Toyota and Daniel Belli in the privateer Lanus Motorsport Chevrolet Cruze rounding out the top ten.

Girolami’s victory with Fontana’s retirement on Sunday means the 25-year-old now leads the championship by 12 points over Fontana with four rounds remaining, with Fiat’s Facundo Ardusso 27 points behind and Werner 31.

The next round of the Championship takes place at San Juan on October 5th.
