Rob Huff hoping for wet races in Japan

Lada Sport failed to make it through the first segment of qualifying today at Suzuka. Rob Huff is the highest-starting Granta from 13th and, in an interview with TouringCarTimes, he made no mystery of the fact he would like tomorrow’s races to be held on a wet track.

“We were hoping to get through to Q2, but at the same time we knew this circuit would be tough for us,” admitted the Brit. “To be fair, we were closer than we expected, but we needed half a second to get to Q2 and that was just impossible. I was on a good lap before the red flag came out, but with two corners left I had to go back to the pits. The lap I did was a bit messy, but still a good one. Q2 may have been possible, but seeing the lap times they set in the session we would not have been competitive enough for tenth, which would have been our goal. We are pretty much where we deserved to be and all we can do now is hoping for a wet day tomorrow.”

Huff finds a positive side in not being able to gain access to Q2 in having saved tyres ahead of the final meeting of the season in Macau:”The good thing is we saved a few tyres for Macau, which is obviously a favourite track of mine, and I hope that we can make it to the top ten in qualifying there. We will try to make the most out of the Suzuka weekend, but to be honest we are not fighting for the championship and we are not interested in anything other than a podium finish, so we can sacrifice the races tomorrow to be fully ready for Macau.”

With a chance of rain for tomorrow, Huff admits he would be happy to race on a wet track:
“If it rains I expect the car to be competitive, it has been good in wet and slippery conditions this year. In Paul Ricard I finished in fifth starting from P13, so I think there is a possibility to move forward in the wet. For the fans it will be really exciting if it’s wet.”

Rob Huff gave Lada Sport their first ever win at Goldenport Park in Beijing earlier this year.
