Citroën to leave either WTCC or WRC after 2016

Citroën has confirmed that they will leave either the FIA World Touring Car Championship or the World Rally Championship after the 2016 season.
“I can safely say to you that we are reviewing the decisions and for 2017 nothing has been decided. But, we have made the decision that Citroën will only be officially involved in one discipline for 2017,” said Linda Jackson, Citroën CEO to Autosport.

Citroën is going to enter Formula E under the Virgin Racing banner, moving the company to choose between WTCC and WRC.

One of the key factors in the decision process is stated to be the location of races and rallies where China is a key market for Citroën.

“We would want a presence in China, that’s our first market and obviously it’s important for us. Whichever discipline we go to, we need to make sure we can work on the same budget or less,” said Jackson.

The WRC has not held a round in China since 1999 while the WTCC has held a race there each year since 2011.
