Tiago Monteiro tests Formula E car at Calafat

World Touring Car Championship front-runner Tiago Monteiro is the latest driver to show his interest in the burgeoning electric racing Formula E Championship, with TouringCarTimes understanding that the Portuguese driver tested for Mahindra Racing at the Circuit de Calafat in Spain last week.

TouringCarTimes has sourced photos of Monteiro, currently second in the WTCC drivers’ championship, testing the Spark-Renault SRT_01E car of the Indian squad at the circuit near Barcelona, Spain.

The Portuguese driver wouldn’t be drawn on the test, only with the 39-year-old former Formula 1 driver confirming that his primary focus is his campaign with Honda in the 2016 championship, and hopefully into 2017.

Monteiro would be expected to be one of the front-runners for the 2017 title following Citroën’s withdrawal from the championship, as well as two-time champion José-María López’s, who will move to Formula E with the DS Virgin Racing team.

This is dependent on Honda confirming their plans to continue their participation, with the Japanese manufacturer expected to make their decision within the next two months.
