Norbert Michelisz didn’t expect the Hondas to be so far behind after qualifying

Local hero Norbert Michelisz was disappointed, despite being the best-placed of the three factory Honda’s in qualifying at his home race at the Hungaroring, after qualifying in sixth position, dropping significantly back in the dry after topping the wet second practice session.

Michelisz will start Race 1 from fifth, and Race 2 from sixth position, but slipped to fifth in the championship standings after Münnich’s Rob Huff claimed five points for pole position.

“In Free Practice 2 we realised the car was quite competitive when the circuit was wet, but when it dried up we knew that with 80kg of weight we knew it was not going to be easy,” said Michelisz.

“I expected Rob (Huff) to be on top, but I also expected us to be right behind, so we have to analyse that…it could be worse as I’m starting sixth for the main race, but I wanted to be in Q3.”

With a strong crowd expected to cheer on the Hungarian star on race day, the 32-year-old said he hopes to deliver at least one podium for his fans.

“My target is to be once or twice on the podium tomorrow,” said Michelisz. “The last time I was fifth in the opening race at Monza and was close to winning the race. My main target is to score some important points in the championship, and also being at home, to try and finish on the podium once.”
