Mastretta to drive two races

The FIA World Touring Car Championship welcomes Mexican youngster Carlos Mastretta Aguilera. The 21-year old will join Tom Coronel at the GR Asia team for the events in Imola and Puebla. Mastretta will take the wheel of the SEAT Toledo Cupra that was driven by Valle Mäkelä in the first three race meetings of the season; the Finn will be back in the championship from Spa.

“Carlos Mastretta’s participation has been organised in close cooperation with José and Julian Abed, promoters of the Mexican event. To have a local driver in the championship will greatly help us in promoting the meeting at Puebla,” explained Marcello Lotti, promoter of the FIA WTCC.

Considered as one of the best prospects for Mexican motorsport, Carlos Mastretta Aguilera boasts an impressive racing CV despite his young age. After claiming the 2001 Mexican Formula A karting title he moved to car racing, taking part in the national Copa Corona for Formula Renault 2000. He was elected ‘rookie of the year’ in 2002 and classified 5th in 2003. Last year he raced in the British Formula Renault 2000 championship.

In the current season Mastretta has come back to the Mexican Copa Corona and finished third in the opening round of the championship, held on May 8th at El Águila.
