Fabrizio Giovanardi confirmed his supremacy in Imola. After he set fastest laps in both the practice sessions, the Alfa Romeo man claimed pole position with a lap in 1:58.573. BMW´s Antonio García set the second fastest time in 1:59.159, while SEAT Sport Jordi Gené was third fastest in 1:59.317.

Augusto Farfus, Gabriele Tarquini and Andy Priaulx set fourth, fifth and sixth fastest laps, ahead of an impressive Roberto Colciago, seventh in his JAS Honda Accord. Colciago´s team-mate, Adriano De Micheli qualified 12th and best of the Independents.
