Harrison and Engström at JAS
JAS Motorsport will run two cars again in the two latest meetings of the 2005 FIA WTCC, at Valencia and Macau. The Italian team, which were forced to race only one Honda Accord car since the second was demolished in a massive crash at Puebla,
have sighed Tomas Engström from Sweden and Simon Harrison from England to join regular driver Adriano De Micheli.
41-year old Engström, who will drive for JAS in Valencia, took part in the 2005 FIA WTCC inaugural event in Monza; his main racing programme for the current season was the Swedish Touring Car Championship in which he was classified fifth with one race win, driving a JAS-built Honda Accord. “It feels good, especially because we are extending the co-operation with JAS. They handle everything at Valencia, we only have to bring two mechanics. They are very eager for me to drive,” Engström said. Harrison will join the team in Macau. 36-year old from Cambridge he competed in last year’s FIA European Touring Car Championship with a GR Asia Honda Civic.
He is also very familiar with the Macau Guia Race, in which he qualified an outstanding 3rd in 2003 at the wheel of his Honda Integra, before being eliminated in a collision with Jörg Müller’s BMW during the race. “It’s a great opportunity to race in Macao with such a competitive car,” Harrison commented. “We will aim for the Independents Trophy, however I would not be surprised to be fighting among the works drivers.”
