Race 2: Priaulx all the way
In an accident packed second race Andy Priaulx took another win in this years world touringcar championship. The British driver got home in front of Gianni Morbidelli, driving an Alfa Romeo, and Allessandra Zanardi in a BMW.
From the start of the race, Andy Priaulx took the lead. He managed to create a small gap between him and Morbidelli. He wouldn’t gave this lead away untill the safety car came out the first time. On lap 6 Rangoni of Proteam Motorsport spun and ended up in the gravel at turn 4 which meant safety car conditions for one lap. On the restart Yvan Muller and Alain Menu were battling for 9th position. After the safety car-period Priaulx again drove away from his direct competitors.
The race ended with a red flag, after Alain Menu had run wide in the last corner and had hit the barriers very hard. Menu spun back onto the track and blocked the main straight.
Just a few laps earlier Emmett O’Brien had done the exact same thing. The Irish BMW-driver had hit the tirewall in exactly the same way as Menu did and blocked the main straight. The safety car came out, so the marshalls could clear the wrackage.
After the safety car there hadn’t been any major changes in the front of the field. Augusto Farfus had already left the race with damage. Behind Zanardi the three Seat’s driven by Thompson, Tarquini and Terting finished. The winner of race 1, Jordi Gené, only finished in 14th. Due to the red flag, Menu was still classified as 10th, his position during lap 14.
The Independents’ trophy battle is hotting up and Tom Coronel and Ryan Sharp were fighting for maximum points. It was Coronel who took the win and 11th position overall but Sharp was literally right behind in 12th. Sharp’s team-mate Giovanardi was unable to take part in the race after due to engine problems.
