Thompson feels Alfa can win races
James Thompson feels that he can win races in the World Touring Car Championship this year with the Alfa Romeo 156. The Alfa Romeo had trouble keeping up with the rest of the pack at the season opener in Brazil.
“I’m not yet comfortable in the Alfa but I’m getting there,” he said to Autosport. “It will take time. I really think that as the weight penalties come into play we can win some races later in the season.”
The Alfa Romeo 156 has stayed virtually the same for a couple of years now while the other teams have done a lot of work. This is due to that Alfa Romeo have pulled out of WTCC officially but had to see through their three year contract with WTCC, lasting until 2008. But Thompson wants to stay in WTCC and with Alfa Romeo.
“I want to be involved with the team for the long haul, not just for this season,” said Thompson.
“I think they have the potential to get back to winning titles. There wouldn’t be any point to me racing if I didn’t think I could take the team forward. They need drivers that will put the hard graft in, and I believe I am the driver to do that.”
