Corthals leads independents trophy
Exagon Engineering’s Pierre-Yves Corthals moved back to the WTCC Independents’ Trophy lead after winning both races in Brands Hatch. The Belgian driver who had slipped down to third further to an unfortunate weekend in Oschersleben, managed to overturn the situation dominating the field on the British racetrack.
Corthals emerged as one of the fastest overall in Brands, setting the second best time in the second free practice and claiming the Independents’ pole position with a brilliant sixth fastest time overall. In both races Corthals was able to keep the pace of the works drivers, finishing eight and ninth overall respectively.
He now has a slim 3-point margin ahead of Wiechers-Sport’s Stefano D’Aste, while Proteam Motorsport’s Luca Rangoni is a further 9 points adrift. Roberto Colciago of SEAT Sport Italia moved up to fourth with a gap of 46 points; however, because double points will be awarded at the final meeting in Macau, he still has theoretical chances to win the title.
