Latest update on the WTCC 2009 rules

The World Touring Car Championship is reported to be on the move to new rules for the 2009 season. The dissatisfaction with the current rules is obvious. Weights change for almost each race and a lot of different dispensations have been issued to different cars.
“It is not good for the WTCC when the weights change after each race. We need solid rules for the future,” FIA technician Gabriele Cadringher said to Motorsport Aktuell.

As we reported the plans for introducing rear wheel drive for all cars have been scrapped. The latest report say that big changes in the engine rules, standard wheelbase for all cars and much more standardized parts are planned.

This is a summary of suggested changes for the 2009 season that we have received:

– 1,8-2,0 liter turbo charged engines
– Standardized sequential gearbox
– Standardized wheelbase
– More standardized parts like differential, suspension parts, etc.

Both the WTCC and the DTM are looking to be on the move to regulations using much more standardized parts. The main reason for this is to get the cars more equal, lower costs and make it easier to build competitive cars for new manufacturers.
