Thiessen speaks about WTCC finale
Since 2004 BMW has taken the drivers title with Andy Priaulx in the World Touring Car Championship and the European Touring Car Championship. This year once again Priaulx is up for the title race and could secure a fourth straight title and a hattrick WTCC title. BMW Motorsport boss Mario Theissen is looking forward to the final race.
“The atmosphere at the final is always very special. It was the same last weekend in Brazil, where we completed our second highly successful year with the BMW Sauber F1 Team. And now I am indeed looking forward to following the two deciding races of the World Touring Car Championship live in Macau. The great thing is that we are in with a chance of winning titles in both the Drivers’ and the Constructors’ Championships,” said Thiessen.
While Priaulx is very much in it for the title race, two other BMW drivers could also be the champion. Augusto Farfus and Jörg Müller are ten and fifteen points behind Priaulx respectively in the championship.
“Theoretically Andy Priaulx is in the best position, of course. He is currently leading the drivers’ standings and might manage his third championship by himself without help from others retiring. But Augusto Farfus is ten points behind Priaulx, and Jorg Muller is 15 points short of the lead having an outside chance of winning. But as I said: anything is possible in Macau,” said Thiessen.
BMW could also secure the manufacturers championship at Macau. The German manufacturer were champions both 2005 and 2006.
“For BMW, the Manufacturers’ Championship is top priority. In 2005 and 2006 we fielded the best cars – the BMW 320i and the BMW 320si WTCC. This season our main aim is to prove that we can do the same again. In any case, Macau promises to be a thrilling event and I am really looking forward to it.”
