WTCC could host race at Nordschleife
The World Touring Car Championship could hold one round at the legendary 20.8 kilometer long Nürburgring Nordschleife in the near future. According to Autosport.nl a group is working hard on getting the WTCC to run the race along side Nürburgring 24-hours which takes place on May 24/25 next year. The project has met enthusiasm from WTCC drivers.
“Sure, they should do it right away,” said SEAT-driver Tom Coronel.
A lot of other drivers were enthusiastic about the idea, like newly crowned champion Andy Priaulx and BMW Motorsport boss Dr. Mario Thiessen.
“If that happens, we will gladly support it. BMW has a long tradition at the Nordschleife,” said Thiessen.
Last time a major touring car series hosted a race at the Nürburgring Nordschleife was DTM in 1993. German S2000 championship ADAC Procar has held races there recently as well.
But the project has one big problem. The WTCC organization has signed a three year deal with Oschersleben to host the German round. Stay tuned for more news on the subject!
