Chevrolet proposes new WTCC penalty system

TouringCarTimes have received information of an new type of equalization system for WTCC that Chevrolet has put forward to the Touring Car Bureau. The suggestion is to measure the performance of the different cars in WTCC during three races and then calculate new weights. For example, if one car is 1 second slower on average over three races compared to the fastest car, the Bureau could change the base weight to reduce the difference in laptimes.

If the new weight then is found to make the car faster over three events compared to the other cars, the Bureau could then change the weight again.

The proposal is according to our information not approved by the Bureau, but is still under discussion. One of the major difficulties this could mean is that teams could deliberately keep their cars under a certain pace to get the weight reduction when it suits them.

In the suggestion it has been pointed out that the system is not ment to compensate weaknesses as a result of bad team or engineering work, but only to compensate weaknesses from the base model of the racing car.

Stay tuned for more information!
