Morocco to join WTCC in 2009

The World Touring Car Championship’s proposed race in the Moroccan capital Marrakech is set to go ahead next year, reports Autosport.

WTCC boss Marcello Lotti has reportedly completed a deal to run a race on the first weekend in May 2009, subject to the race promoters meeting their financial obligations.

The event will be held on a temporary circuit in an industrial area approximately six kilometres south of the city centre. Lotti said: “The plans have been inspected and I have received a very good report. It’s a great chance for the WTCC to expand into another continent.”

With the inclusion of the Moroccan round on this date means that the proposed start of the 2009 season in Brazil could be as early as February.
