Introduction of turbo engines delayed

The introduction of turbo charged 1.6 liter engines in the World Touring Car Championship has, according to our information, been moved forward due to the economical situation in the world. The earliest point that we could see 1.6 engines in the WTCC is 2011.

Most manufacturers represented in the Touring Car Bureau are reported to be in favor of the new engines that will have a standard turbo charger. Some parties, like Audi, are reported to be in favor of a bigger engine size.

The Touring Car Bureau are co-operating with the World Rally Championship, a championship that also is on the verge of introducing new regulations.

The WRC organizers are shortly going to take a decision on what type of rules to use. They are, according to our information, choosing mainly between the current S2000 regulations, used in WTCC, and S2000 with a turbo charged engine, similar to the upgrades planned for WTCC, at the earliest point, 2011.

A co-operation regarding rules between WTCC and WRC could result in a boost of manufacturers and cars on the grids for both series.
