Lada have launched their official design for the 2009 FIA World Touring Car Championship. The Russian manufacturer will start the season with the 110-model before introducing the newer Priora-model at Brno with a new engine. Jaap van Lagen has signed a three year deal and is looking forward to the season premiere at Curitiba in two weeks.
“I am happy! It is unique for a driver to get a works drive, especially in these financially difficult times,” said van Lagen on his website.

The Lada commitment to WTCC spans over three years. Van Lagen’s two other team mates are Russians, Viktor Shapovalov and Kirill Ladygin.

“Lada is doing this seriously and the team is full of confidence,” said van Lagen.

Lada will start the season with the 110-model, the very same they used last season. The newer Priora-model will be introduced later in the season, at Brno, together with a more powerful engine.

“Shapovalov will focus on the development of the new car and make the debut with it at Brno while I focus on the results,” said van Lagen.

Despite the high spirits in the Lada-team, van Lagen is cautious about the expectations of results this season.

“We must be realistic, especially during the first part of the season. Once we get the new engine, which will give around 25 horsepower extra, things will be different. The goal for 2009 is finishing in the points,” said van Lagen.

The team is running a tight schedule and the re-worked 110-model has not been tested before it was shipped to Brazil.
