1.6 turbo engines confirmed for 2011

The FIA World Touring Car Championship is going to move to one allowed engine type, starting from the 2011 season. The engine is going to be turbo charged, run on petrol and of 1.6 liter. The decision was taken today by the FIA World Council.

The decision has been forced forward after the dispute between manufacturers over the difference between petrol, diesel and turbo charged engines.

The current two liter engines (petrol/diesel) are going to be fazed out, but continued to be allowed for at least the 2011 season.

At first the new S1600 engines are going to be balanced for equal performance with the S2000 engines. Later the S1600 engines are expected to be changed, just as the new NGTC (BTCC) rules.

The new S1600 engine is going to be introduced for rallying in 2011 as well, making it easier for manufacturers to take part in both disciplines.
