Tom Coronel comments his situation
Tom Coronel announced earlier that he was going to sit out the two final races of the World Touring Car Championship. But the Dutchman is currently working hard on getting the required funds for Okayama and Macau.
“It’s never easy to find sponsors. Luckily everyone in the series wants me to continue: SEAT, KSO, SUNRED and all my partners that allowed me to be on track this year,” Coronel said to TouringCarTimes.com.
“One day you feel like you are going to sign and everything is going to be okay and the next day you feel like you’re miles away from signing. But we all know how the motorsport world is working.”
The latest rumors have indicated that Coronel could be doing the final two races for another team.
“It sounds like an interesting news, I will go and ask them! No, seriously, staying with SUNRED is a priority for me. They have supported me in such a great way during the last two seasons.
If a serious proposal comes in, though, I will have to accept: I need to finish the championship, that’s the most important thing for me, also as a form of respect towards all the efforts we put in throughout all of these years.”
When SEAT Holland sent the press release about Coronel missing the two last WTCC races, the possibility to look into another series, possibly the BTCC, was mentioned. But Coronel denies any project regarding the British series.
“This winter it was different, but now all of my partners are only interested in the WTCC. By now I need to focus on the last two WTCC rounds, anyway, and then we’ll see what comes next.”
TouringCarTimes understands that Coronel’s SEAT will be shipped to the next race at Okayama, Japan, anyway. Should Coronel not be able to take part in the last two events, SUNRED Engineering is going to try and find a local driver for the car.
