Lopez hopes for 2010 F1 debut
Championship leader and reigning TC2000 champion Jose-Maria Lopez has indicated he is set to drive for the new USF1 Formula 1 team next season if he can complete his sponsorship package.
Lopez has competed in the GP2 series previously, taking one victory in Spain, and since has raced in the FIA GT and now two years at the front of the Argentine series.
Lopez reported on his site that he visited the team’s headquarters in the US this week, and expects to confirm enough sponsorship to secure the seat, after a multitude of names has been linked to the team in recent months.
Jose Maria Lopez said:
“Up until now we have dealt with this over the phone, and given the progress, we went to visit the team personally and talk to Peter Window and Ken Anderson about it. We verbally agreed a deal that will be completed next week.”
Peter Windsor has recently made it clear he believes Jose Maria Lopez is a driver with much talent that he hopes will drive for the USF1 team next season.
Lopez currently sits in a strong position, with a 30 point lead going into the final round of the TC2000 series over his team mate, whilst Toyota rival Norberto Fontana, also a former F1 driver with Sauber, lies in fourth place after a run of poor results since his victory at the Buenos Aires 200km race.
