Tarquini not confirmed at SUNRED [update]

After an earlier announcement by Tom Coronel’s management that Tarquini would race for SUNRED, that statement has now been rescinded. This throws into doubt whether the champion has signed, or if it was just another premature information release.

Tom Coronel is certainly confirmed at the team however.

There is no further information available at this time.

Gabriele Tarquini has raced for SEAT since 2006, after leaving Alfa Romeo. When the SEAT Sport team withdrew from the championship earlier in January, this left the reigning champion without a drive with any of the manufacturer backed entries.

Team mate and rival Yvan Muller had already secured his future after moving across to Chevrolet to replace Nicola Larini.

It seemed as though for the first time in the WTCC, the champion could possibly not be returning to defend their title until the earlier announcement.

UPDATE: Tom spoke to Touring Car Times, and confirmed that Tarquini has not signed to race for SUNRED – and apologises for the confusion from the earlier announcement.

At present, SUNRED will be fielding at least two SEAT Leon TDI’s for 2009 independent champion Tom Coronel and 2009 Danish Touring Car champion Michael Nykjaer.
