Zandvoort keen to get Mexico round
The Dutch track Zandvoort is willing to take over the FIA World Touring Car Championship round of Mexico.
“Under reasonable conditions, we would certainly be up for the challenge,” said Erik Weijers of the Zandvoort track to Autosport.nl.
The Mexican round, scheduled for the 10-11th April, is reported to have been cancelled due to the circumstances in the region after previous flooding.
The Mexican round has been removed from the FIA website and their international calendar. But the WTCC organisation does not want to comment the situation yet.
“At this stage we cannot comment the situation,” said WTCC press officer Fabio Ravaioli to TouringCarTimes.com.
With the WTCC round in Mexico only five weeks away, it is going to be little time for Zandvoort to prepare if the WTCC organisation, KSO, decides to move the race there.
“We have not been approached by KSO. It is obviously a very short time period ahead of the race, but if there is a will, there is a way,” said Weijers.
The race in Mexico of 2007 was replaced by Zandvoort when the Mexican circuit was found not to be up to the required standards.
