Championship handicap could be dropped
The championship handicap used in the qualifying heats of the TC2000 championship could be dropped in 2011, meaning Oberá in late October could be the last time it’s used.
The handicap works by taking 12 places away after the qualifying session from the driver who leads the championship. There is then a qualifying race, where no points are awarded, to set the starting position for the main race.
Positions are removed for the top 12 drivers in the championship, down to one place dropped for the driver in 12th.
The result is a very mixed up grid for the qualifying race, and faster drivers are always forced into making up positions in the race.
Corsa Magazine Argentina reports that Pablo Peón, head of the Turismo Competición is ready to rethink these rules.
“For me the first thing is the opinion of the public. If people do not like the handicap, we should try a change,” said Peón.
The series will also be dropping it’s Endurance Cup, where the points are awarded separately to the overall championship to the full time drivers in the endurance events.
