Chevrolet sought agreement with BMW

Chevrolet have confirmed they tried to reach an agreement with BMW in order to avoid going to the court of appeal, but were turned down by BMW, who were certain their car was legal.

With the stewards having ruled at Japan that the BMW 320si could race with a sequential six-speed gearbox, BMW felt that their interpretation of the legality of their car wasn’t in question, but Chevrolet was adamant that the BMW 320si GBS has never been cleared or homologated by the FIA except for Italian driver Alex Zanardi.

Chevrolet have confirmed that “in the interest of sports, Chevrolet had sought to have the issues arisen in Okayama (the sequential gearbox used by and the weight compensation applied to our main competitor) solved via a gentlemen’s agreement, but the other party involved preferred to have them brought before the FIA Court of Appeal”.

Yvan Muller now goes into the final race unable to be caught, and Muller can go to Macau less pressured.

“I can go to Macau with a more relaxed spirit, but we have to keep in mind that anything can happen in Macau,” said Muller.

“We need to stay completely focused and work well on the Cruze, which has been excellent on all types of circuits this year”.
