Turkington hits Macau trouble again

Colin Turkington’s second time at Macau wasn’t a good weekend for the team, with a transmission failure taking away any points opportunity.

The 2009 British Touring Car Champion competed in only his fifth race weekend of the season, and although he dropped one place in the standings behind Hungarian driver Norbert Michelisz who had a strong weekend in the Zengo Motorsport SEAT, Turkington still finished tenth in the overall WTCC points standings ahead of many full time runners.

Although Turkington qualified in 15th place, the West Surrey Racing team were hopeful of a good points result from the weekend, but when a new transmission component snapped in race one, Turkington’s weekend was derailed from the start.

In race two, with a new part fitted, the WSR BMW 320si took to the track from the back, but due to this placing was caught up in the pile-up behind Andrei Romanov’s spun BMW, and then the team were handed a drive through penalty for working on the car after the three minute board was shown during the red flag interruption.

Despite only competing in five meetings of eleven, Turkington finishes 10th in the standings ahead of season long competitors such as Michel Nykjaer and Fredy Barth in the SUNRED SEAT León TDI’s, and all of the Yokohama Independents’ Trophy competitors.

West Surrey Racing are assessing their options to run a full season in the WTCC in 2011.
