Rob Huff in strong position for Monza race day
Rob Huff has qualified on the front-row for both of tomorrow’s races, despite a scare in Qualifying 1 which saw the Briton set to start in 14th up until his last second flying lap.
The 2011 World Touring Car Championship leader was able to set a time good enough for the top ten as he passed the chequered flag, which gave him P2 on the grid for race two as well as an entry into Q2. In Q2 he went on to set pole position thanks to the three Chevrolet drivers working together to slipstream around the Monza straights.
“I was trying to drive to a lap time, but obviously wasn’t driving fast enough and the lap time was changing consistently,” said Huff to TouringCarTimes.
“Just before Parabolica on each lap I was on for the time, but then obviously the lap time jumped. On the last lap I just made sure I got into the top ten. I didn’t expect to be P9, but I’m very pleased with that. That’s the way qualifying works, sometimes you’re lucky, sometimes you’re not, so we got lucky.”
Huff’s now in the strongest position tomorrow, starting ahead of team-mates Yvan Muller and Alain Menu for race one, and still the top Chevrolet, just behind the SUNRED SEAT León TDI of Tiago Monteiro for race two, and is targeting a strong points result on race day tomorrow.
“It’s still very early in the championship but we’ve had two wins and three poles now and yeah I’m in the best position.”
“Is pole the best position in Monza? Sometimes yes, sometimes no, at the end of the day I’m punching a hole for the rest of the grid going down in to turn one, and in turn one anything can happen, you could get hit from behind, so we’ll just wait and see, I’m just looking for two good results tomorrow.”
